Chennai and its surrounding region form the state's leading centre for automobile and auto-component manufacturing (sometimes informally called the 'Detroit of India'), and the city has also, more recently, emerged as a significant hub for information technology and IT-enabled services. Tiruppur, in western Tamil Nadu, has grown into one of India's most important knitwear and hosiery-manufacturing clusters, with production geared substantially towards exports. Coimbatore, also in western Tamil Nadu, has a much older history as a textile-manufacturing centre, built originally around cotton mills, which earned it the informal title 'Manchester of South India'; the city has since diversified further into general and textile engineering. Vellore and the neighbouring town of Ranipet, in northern Tamil Nadu, form a well-known cluster for leather and leather-goods manufacturing, including production for export markets. …
