Octal positional expansion works across the point: digits left of it weigh 8^0, 8^1, 8^2, ... and digits right of it weigh 1/8, 1/64, ...

Why this works. Positional notation in base 8 assigns each place a power of 8; the fractional places carry the negative powers.

Integer part (605)8:

DigitPlace valueContribution
68^2 = 64384
08^1 = 80
58^0 = 15

Sum = 389.

Fractional part (.12)8:

DigitPlace valueContribution
11/8 = 0.1250.125
21/64 = 0.0156250.03125
(.12)8 = 1x(1/8) + 2x(1/64) = 0.125 + 0.03125 = 0.15625
(605.12)8 = 389 + 0.15625 = (389.15625)10 …
