An auxanometer (e.g. Pfeffer's auxanometer) magnifies the very small, slow growth movement of a plant's tip into an easily readable, larger movement of a pointer over a graduated scale/drum. A thread tied to the growing tip passes over a pulley; as the plant grows, the thread pulls and rotates the pulley, which carries a long pointer whose tip sweeps a much larger arc on the dial. This magnifying relationship is used to work backward from the pointer's movement to the actual (much smaller) growth of the plant, using the ratio of pulley size to pointer length:
