Sapwood is the peripheral, functional, water-conducting part of the wood, while heartwood is the older, central, non-functional part that provides structural support.

As a woody dicot stem undergoes secondary growth, the vascular cambium keeps adding new layers of secondary xylem year after year. Over time, the wood in such a stem differentiates into two distinct regions:

Sapwood (Alburnum):

  • The outer, peripheral region of the secondary xylem, located closer to the vascular cambium.
  • Light in colour (pale).
  • Physiologically active/functional — it is the region through which water and minerals are actually conducted upward (the tracheids and vessels here are open, not blocked).
  • Comparatively younger, made up of more recently formed secondary xylem.
  • More susceptible to attack by insects, fungi, and decay, since it contains living parenchyma cells and stored food.

Heartwood (Duramen):

  • The inner, central region of the secondary xylem, located away from the cambium (in the centre of an old stem).
  • Dark in colour, due to the deposition of substances such as tannins, resins, gums, and aromatic/organic compounds in the cell walls and lumens of the xylem elements. …
