The Greenhouse effect is the natural trapping of the Earth's outgoing heat radiation by atmospheric greenhouse gases, which keeps the planet warm; human-driven excess emissions intensify it into global warming.

Sunlight (mostly visible and UV radiation) passes through the Earth's atmosphere and is absorbed by the land and oceans, warming the surface. The warmed Earth then re-emits this energy back out as longer-wavelength infrared (heat) radiation.

Certain atmospheric gases — called greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), water vapour, nitrous oxide (N2O), and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) — are able to absorb this outgoing infrared radiation (rather than letting it escape directly to space) and then re-radiate part of it back towards the Earth's surface. This traps heat within the lower atmosphere, in a manner loosely analogous to how a glass greenhouse retains warmth, hence the name "Greenhouse effect".
