Step 1. BOD. Biochemical Oxygen Demand is the total amount of oxygen, in milligrams, consumed by micro-organisms in decomposing the waste present in one litre of water, at 20°C, over a period of 5 days; expressed in ppm. It is a biological measurement -- it depends on living micro-organisms actually decomposing the waste.

Step 2. COD. Chemical Oxygen Demand is the amount of oxygen required by the organic matter in a water sample for its oxidation by a strong oxidising agent, such as K₂Cr₂O₇, in acid medium, over a period of 2 hours. It is a chemical measurement -- no living organisms are needed, and it is measured because BOD's 5-day wait is inconvenient.
