Step 1. A known mass of the organic compound is sealed in a Carius tube with fuming nitric acid AND silver nitrate, then heated in a protective iron tube for about 5 hours at 530-540 K.

Step 2. During heating, carbon, hydrogen and any sulphur present are oxidised away (to CO2, H2O and SO2 respectively), while the halogen combines directly with the silver nitrate present, precipitating as the corresponding silver halide (AgCl, AgBr or AgI).
