Advantages of Using Standard Solutions
Working from a concentrated stock solution and diluting it as needed, rather than weighing out a fresh dilute solution every time, has three practical advantages:
- Reduced weighing error. A concentrated stock solution needs a comparatively large mass of solute to prepare, which can be weighed accurately on an ordinary balance. Trying to weigh out the tiny mass of solute a very dilute working solution would need directly is far more error-prone.
- Efficiency and consistency. From one stock solution, working standards of many different concentrations can all be prepared quickly by simple dilution, and each dilution is quick and reproducible -- this keeps preparations consistent across an entire series of experiments. …
