Osmotic pressure (pi) is the pressure that must be applied to a solution to stop solvent from osmosing into it through a semipermeable membrane.

When a solution is separated from pure solvent by a semipermeable membrane (one that allows solvent molecules to pass through but not solute molecules), solvent molecules spontaneously flow from the pure-solvent side into the solution side -- this is osmosis, driven by the tendency to equalise solvent concentration/chemical potential on both sides.
