Rational Functions

A rational expression in xx is the ratio P(x)Q(x)\dfrac{P(x)}{Q(x)} of two polynomials with Q(x)≠0Q(x)\ne0, defined for every xx where Q(x)≠0Q(x)\ne0. If deg⁡P≥deg⁡Q\deg P\ge\deg Q, dividing (§2.6.1's division algorithm) gives

P(x)Q(x)=f(x)+r(x)Q(x),deg⁡r<deg⁡Q,\dfrac{P(x)}{Q(x)}=f(x)+\dfrac{r(x)}{Q(x)},\qquad \deg r<\deg Q, …
