Foetal development is monitored using ultrasonography (ultrasonogram), which uses high-frequency sound waves rather than ionising radiation to visualise the foetus safely.

Ultrasonography (USG), commonly called an ultrasound scan or sonogram, works by sending high-frequency sound waves (beyond the range of human hearing) into the body through a transducer; these sound waves reflect differently off tissues of different densities, and a computer converts the returned echoes into a real-time image.
