CT scanning gives detailed, cross-sectional 3-D images with better soft-tissue contrast than plain X-rays, and is faster than MRI, making it especially useful for emergency and detailed diagnosis.

Advantages of CT over other imaging techniques:

  1. Cross-sectional, 3-dimensional detail: unlike a conventional X-ray, which produces a single flat, overlapping 2-D image of all structures superimposed, CT takes many X-ray images from different angles and reconstructs them into thin cross-sectional 'slices', allowing structures to be seen individually without overlap, and even reconstructed into 3-D images.

  2. Better soft-tissue contrast: CT can distinguish between tissues of only slightly different densities (e.g. differentiating a tumour from surrounding healthy tissue) far better than a plain X-ray, which mainly shows dense structures like bone clearly.

  3. Speed: a CT scan can be performed in a matter of seconds to a few minutes, making it much faster than an MRI scan, which can take significantly longer — this speed is critical in emergencies such as detecting internal bleeding, trauma, or a stroke.
