The liver is a multifunctional organ: it secretes bile, regulates blood glucose, detoxifies the blood, synthesises plasma proteins, forms urea, and stores vitamins/minerals.

Key functions of the human liver:

  • Bile secretion: produces bile containing bile salts, which emulsify fats in the duodenum, aiding fat digestion and absorption.
  • Carbohydrate/glucose regulation: stores excess glucose as glycogen (glycogenesis) and breaks it down (glycogenolysis) to release glucose when blood sugar falls, helping maintain a stable blood glucose level.
  • Detoxification: breaks down and neutralises harmful substances, drugs, alcohol and toxins absorbed from the gut before they reach general circulation.
  • Deamination and urea formation: removes the amino (-NH2) group from excess amino acids and converts the resulting toxic ammonia into less toxic urea (via the ornithine/urea cycle) for excretion by the kidneys.
  • Synthesis of plasma proteins: produces albumin (maintains blood osmotic pressure), fibrinogen and prothrombin (essential for blood clotting).
  • Storage: stores fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), vitamin B12, and iron (as ferritin). …
