Benefits of regular Exercise

Physical activity and exercise fall into four broad categories, each targeting a different aspect of fitness:

  • Endurance (aerobic) activities — raise breathing and heart rate, keeping the circulatory system healthy and improving overall fitness.
  • Strength exercises — make muscles stronger, supporting independence in everyday tasks such as climbing stairs and carrying bags.
  • Balance exercises — help prevent falls, a common problem in older adults; many strength exercises also improve balance as a side effect.
  • Flexibility exercises — stretch muscles to give joints a greater free range of movement.

Regular exercise produces a wide range of measurable physiological benefits: exercised muscles grow larger and stronger; resting heart rate decreases; more metabolic enzymes are synthesised in muscle fibres; ligaments and tendons become stronger; joints become more flexible; and the risk of heart attack is reduced. Beyond the musculoskeletal system, regular exercise also positively influences hormonal activity, improves cognitive function, helps prevent obesity, and boosts confidence and self-esteem, contributing to an overall better quality of life while helping to prevent depression, stress and anxiety.
