Step 1. Travelling quickly to high altitude (above about 8000 ft) exposes a person to lower atmospheric pressure and lower pO2, so haemoglobin cannot bind oxygen as effectively; this can cause acute mountain sickness with headache, breathlessness, nausea, dizziness and palpitations.

Step 2. Diving deep underwater creates the opposite problem: increasing water pressure compresses the lungs and raises the partial pressure of gases within them, driving extra nitrogen into the blood and risking nitrogen narcosis at depth; if the diver then ascends too quickly, the dissolved nitrogen forms bubbles in the blood (decompression sickness, or 'the bends'), which can block capillaries or press on nerves, causing joint/muscle pain or neurological problems. …
