A frog respires by three different routes — cutaneous, buccopharyngeal, and pulmonary — used at different times depending on habitat and activity.

1. Cutaneous respiration:

Gas exchange occurs directly through the frog's thin, moist, highly vascularised skin. This works both in water and on land and is especially important during hibernation (in mud) and aestivation, when lungs are barely used.

2. Buccopharyngeal respiration:

Gas exchange occurs through the richly vascular lining of the buccal cavity (mouth) and pharynx. The frog rhythmically raises and lowers the floor of its mouth to ventilate this surface. This is mainly used while the frog is resting quietly on land.
