Cross breeding combines two different breeds of the same species through controlled mating, aiming to bring together the best traits of both parent breeds in the offspring.

In animal husbandry, breeding methods are used to genetically improve livestock for traits like milk yield, growth rate, disease resistance or wool quality. Cross breeding is one such method, in which superior males of one breed are deliberately mated with superior females of a different, but related, breed within the same species.

The purpose of cross breeding is to combine the good characteristics of both parent breeds in their offspring — for instance, crossing a high milk-yielding but heat-sensitive exotic breed of cattle with a hardy, disease-resistant local breed can produce offspring with both improved milk yield and better adaptability to local conditions. Cross breeding often also produces 'hybrid vigour' (heterosis), where the offspring show superior performance compared to either parent breed alone.
