Under the single entry / incomplete records system, proper double-entry ledgers are not maintained, so a trial balance and a regular Balance Sheet cannot be prepared. To find the capital at a point in time, a Statement of Affairs is drawn up:
- On one side it lists all the liabilities (creditors, bills payable, outstanding expenses, loans).
- On the other side it lists all the assets (cash, bank, stock, debtors, fixed assets), whose values are largely estimated from available information and physical checks.
- The balancing figure — the excess of assets over liabilities — is the Capital:
Capital = Total Assets − Total Liabilities
