Q.What do you mean by the term 'consumerism'?
Consumerism is best understood not as a single law but as a broad, organised social movement that brings together individual consumers, consumer associations, and the state, all working toward one goal: protecting the rights and interests of buyers against unfair, deceptive, or exploitative trade practices in the marketplace.
The term is often loosely used to mean 'consumer protection law,' but this conflates the movement with one of its instruments. Consumerism is wider than any single statute — it includes consumer education (teaching buyers their rights and how to exercise them, such as checking quality marks or insisting on a bill), organisation (consumers coming together in associations or cooperative societies to gain the collective bargaining strength no individual buyer possesses alone), advocacy (consumer bodies and citizens pressing government and businesses to adopt fairer practices, stronger regulation, and better redressal), and legal redressal (using the law as the enforceable backstop when a genuine grievance cannot be resolved informally).
The movement exists because, left to market forces alone, the relationship between an individual buyer and an organised seller or manufacturer is rarely one of equals — the seller typically holds far more information, resources, and bargaining power. Consumerism is the collective response to that imbalance. Consumer protection principles of this kind are common across Indian commerce curricula, and are grounded in India's national consumer-protection legal framework, which itself recognises a defined set of consumer rights and provides accessible redressal machinery.
Consumerism is the organised social movement — comprising consumer education, consumer organisation, public advocacy, and legal redressal — through which consumers, consumer bodies, and the state work together to protect buyers against unfair, deceptive, or exploitative trade practices.
