Employment (selection) tests are standardised tools used to measure a candidate's specific abilities in an objective, comparable way. The main types are:

  1. Aptitude tests — measure a candidate's potential or latent ability to LEARN a particular skill, rather than a skill already possessed; useful for judging how well a candidate is likely to pick up a job's demands with training.
  2. Intelligence tests — measure general mental ability, such as reasoning, comprehension, and problem-solving capacity.
  3. Personality tests — assess personal qualities and traits such as emotional stability, confidence, sociability, and temperament, relevant to jobs that need particular behavioural qualities.
  4. Trade/proficiency tests — measure a skill the candidate ALREADY possesses, for example asking a typing-job candidate to actually type a passage, or a technical candidate to solve a sample technical problem. …
