Why Rights and Responsibilities Must Go Together

Consumer rights and consumer duties are not two separate topics; they are two halves of the same protective system, and one is largely ineffective without the other.

If consumers had rights but no responsibilities, many would stop checking bills, stop comparing products, and stop verifying quality marks — trusting the law alone to fix every problem after it occurs. This would increase disputes, make genuine complaints harder to prove (no bill, no evidence), and burden consumer forums with avoidable cases.

If consumers had responsibilities but no rights, an alert, well-informed buyer would still have no legal recourse against a hazardous product, a false claim, or a deficient service — carefulness alone cannot substitute for the absence of a legal safeguard. …
