Tadasana

Tadasana (palm-tree pose) is also recommended as a preventive asana for back pain and arthritis, which is why the CBSE Class 12 Physical Education textbook lists it again here. To avoid repeating the same posture, the book does not re-describe it in this section.

Its full name-meaning, step-by-step technique, breathing pattern, benefits and contraindications — along with its posture figure — are given earlier under section 3.1.1 (Asanas to Prevent Obesity). The textbook marks this with a short cross-reference: See 3.1.1.

Why Tadasana helps with back pain and arthritis

Standing with the spine in one long, straight line from the heels to the crown of the head is the clearest possible training in correct postural alignment, and poor postural alignment, sustained for years, is one of the most common underlying causes of chronic back pain. By practising this fully upright position regularly, the postural muscles along the spine learn to hold the back in its healthiest position even outside the asana, which helps protect the joints of the spine from the uneven loading that leads to pain and, over time, to arthritic changes.

Specific benefits for back pain and arthritis

  • Strengthens the legs, ankles and knee joints, taking pressure off the spine during standing and walking.
  • Stretches and opens the hips, hamstrings, shoulders and spine together, which keeps the whole kinetic chain supporting the back supple.
  • Directly reduces back pain and sciatica, as noted in the asana's own listed benefits.
  • Improves balance, reducing the risk of falls that could worsen an arthritic joint.
