Step 1. A mature ovule (megasporangium) is made up of two main parts: a stalk and a body, protected by one or two coverings called integuments.

Step 2. The stalk, called the funiculus or funicle, is present at the base and attaches the ovule to the placenta; the point where the funicle joins the ovule body is called the hilum, and in an inverted ovule the funicle becomes fused (adnate) along the body, forming a ridge called the raphe.

Step 3. The body of the ovule is made up of a central mass of food-rich parenchymatous tissue called the nucellus, which is enveloped by one integument (unitegmic) or two integuments (bitegmic).

Step 4. The integument encloses the nucellus completely except at the top, where it stays open as a pore called the micropyle; the basal region where the nucellus, integument and funicle all meet is called the chalaza. …
