Step 1. In the dicot seed of Cicer (gram), the seed coat is differentiated into two layers - a hard outer testa and a thin, membranous inner tegmen (fused together in Pea) - and a scar, the hilum, marks where the funiculus detached, with the micropyle just below it.

Step 2. The Cicer embryo has two cotyledons, laterally attached to the embryonal axis, which themselves store the seed's food reserves; the axis above cotyledon level is the epicotyl (terminating in the plumule) and the axis at cotyledon level is the hypocotyl (terminating in the radicle).

Step 3. In the monocot seed of Oryza (paddy), the whole fruit is a one-seeded caryopsis enclosed in a brownish husk of glumes; its thin, membranous seed coat is fused closely to the grain rather than being separately peelable.

Step 4. Instead of cotyledon-stored food, the bulk of the Oryza grain is starchy endosperm, separated from the small embryo by a distinct layer called the epithelium; the embryo has only one shield-shaped cotyledon, the scutellum, positioned to one side of the axis. …
