Genes close together on one chromosome that are inherited together are called linked genes.

According to the chromosomal theory of inheritance, genes are arranged linearly along chromosomes, and genes located physically close to one another on the same chromosome have a low probability of being separated by crossing over during meiosis; as a result they tend to be transmitted together to offspring as a unit, a phenomenon called linkage, and such genes are termed linked genes.
