The Arrhenius equation k=Ae−Ea/RTk = Ae^{-E_a/RT} expresses how the rate constant of a reaction depends exponentially on temperature and activation energy.

The Arrhenius equation is written as:

k=A e−Ea/RTk = A\,e^{-E_a/RT}

or in its logarithmic (linear) form:

ln⁡k=ln⁡A−EaRTorlog⁡k=log⁡A−Ea2.303 RT\ln k = \ln A - \frac{E_a}{RT} \quad\text{or}\quad \log k = \log A - \frac{E_a}{2.303\,RT}

Terms:

  • kk = the rate constant of the reaction at absolute temperature TT.
  • AA = the pre-exponential factor (also called the frequency factor or Arrhenius constant), which represents the frequency of collisions between reactant molecules and accounts for the fraction of collisions that have the correct orientation for reaction; it has the same units as kk.
  • EaE_a = the activation energy of the reaction (in J mol−1J\,mol^{-1} or kJ mol−1kJ\,mol^{-1}), the minimum extra energy that colliding molecules must possess, over their average energy, to react.
  • RR = the universal gas constant (8.314 J K−1 mol−18.314\,J\,K^{-1}\,mol^{-1}).
  • TT = the absolute temperature (in kelvin). …
