Faraday's two laws of electrolysis relate the mass of a substance liberated at an electrode to the quantity of electricity passed (First Law) and, for a fixed charge, to the substance's equivalent weight (Second Law).

Faraday's First Law of Electrolysis: The mass (ww) of a substance deposited or liberated at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electricity (charge, QQ) passed through the electrolyte: w∝Qi.e.w=Z×Q=Z×i×tw \propto Q \quad\text{i.e.}\quad w = Z \times Q = Z \times i \times t where ii is the current, tt is the time, and ZZ (the constant of proportionality) is called the electrochemical equivalent of the substance — the mass deposited by passing 1 coulomb of charge.
