Step 1. Ammonium benzoate (C6H5-COONH4) heated strongly with P2O5 dehydrates by the same route as ammonium acetate to ethanenitrile: it gives benzonitrile, C6H5-CN + 2H2O.

Step 2. 'The product so formed is reduced' -- reducing a nitrile (LiAlH4 or Ni/H2) gives a PRIMARY amine with the SAME carbon skeleton, R-CH2-NH2.
