Exercise 10.8 · Q9

Q.A pot of boiling water at 100∘C100^\circ C is removed from a stove at time t=0t=0 and left to cool in the kitchen. After 55 minutes, the water temperature has decreased to 80∘C80^\circ C, and another 55 minutes later it has dropped to 65∘C65^\circ C. Determine the temperature of the kitchen.

Unlike the previous two problems, the ambient (kitchen) temperature is itself unknown; use the two given readings to eliminate kk algebraically and solve for TmT_m alone.

Step 1. Set up. T−Tm=Ce−ktT-T_m=Ce^{-kt}. At t=0, T=100t=0,\ T=100: C=100−TmC=100-T_m.

Step 2. Write the two data equations. With r=e−5kr=e^{-5k}: at t=5, T=80t=5,\ T=80: 80−Tm=(100−Tm)r80-T_m=(100-T_m)r …(A). At t=10, T=65t=10,\ T=65: 65−Tm=(100−Tm)r265-T_m=(100-T_m)r^2 …(B).

Step 3. Eliminate rr. From (A), r=80−Tm100−Tmr=\dfrac{80-T_m}{100-T_m}. Substitute into (B): 65−Tm=(100−Tm)(80−Tm100−Tm)2=(80−Tm)2100−Tm65-T_m=(100-T_m)\left(\dfrac{80-T_m}{100-T_m}\right)^2=\dfrac{(80-T_m)^2}{100-T_m}. …
