Activity is the rate at which radioactive nuclei decay, A=λNA=\lambda N, measured in becquerel.

1. Meaning. A radioactive sample contains a large number of unstable nuclei that decay randomly and spontaneously. The activity (or decay rate) of the sample is defined as the number of nuclei disintegrating per unit time.

2. Expression. If NN is the number of undecayed radioactive nuclei present at time tt, and λ\lambda is the decay constant (probability of decay per unit time, characteristic of the nuclide), the activity is

A=−dNdt=λNA = -\dfrac{dN}{dt} = \lambda N

The negative sign in dN/dtdN/dt shows NN decreases with time, while AA itself is taken as positive. Since N=N0e−λtN = N_0 e^{-\lambda t}, activity also falls exponentially: A=A0e−λtA = A_0 e^{-\lambda t}, where A0=λN0A_0=\lambda N_0 is the initial activity.
