Step 2. Continuous emission spectrum: if light from an incandescent lamp (filament bulb) is passed through a prism, it splits up into all seven visible colours with no gaps -- a continuous band of wavelengths from violet to red. Examples: the spectra of carbon arc and incandescent solids.
Step 3. Line emission spectrum: if light from a hot gas is passed through a prism, a line spectrum -- also called a discontinuous spectrum -- is observed, consisting of sharp lines at definite wavelengths.
