Step 1. In an ordinary Young's double slit setup, the central maximum sits exactly opposite the midpoint of the two slits, where the path difference from both slits is zero.

Step 2. Placing a thin glass plate over one slit adds an extra optical path (n−1)t(n-1)t for the light passing through that slit (where tt is the plate's thickness), so light from that slit now needs to travel a shorter geometric distance on the screen to still have zero net path difference.
