Hypophysation is induced fish breeding by injecting pituitary-gland (hypophysis) extract to make cultivable fishes spawn in ponds.

Many economically important cultivable fishes (such as Indian major carps — Catla, Rohu, Mrigal) attain maturity in ponds but do not spawn there naturally, because the pond does not provide the natural riverine cues needed for breeding. To overcome this, fish farmers use a technique called hypophysation.

Method:

  • The pituitary gland (hypophysis) is removed from a mature donor fish; it is rich in gonadotropic hormones that stimulate the gonads.
  • A prepared extract of this gland (or a synthetic hormone such as ovaprim today) is injected into ripe brood fish (a smaller priming dose, then a larger dose, especially to the female). …
