(a) An MFC harnesses bacterial metabolism of organic waste to generate electricity directly. (b) Recombinant (Eli Lilly's Humulin-type) human insulin is made by expressing its A and B chains separately in E. coli and joining them chemically.

(a) A Microbial Fuel Cell is a device that converts chemical energy present in organic compounds into electrical energy through the catalytic activity of micro-organisms. In the anode chamber, bacteria metabolise organic substrates (e.g., the organic matter in sewage/waste water) anaerobically, and in doing so release electrons and protons. The electrons are transferred (directly, or via mediator molecules) to the anode electrode and then flow through an external circuit to the cathode, constituting an electric current that can be harnessed as usable electricity. Protons diffuse through the solution or a proton-exchange membrane to the cathode chamber, where they combine with the arriving electrons and (usually) oxygen to form water, completing the circuit. Because the same process that generates electricity also breaks down and removes organic pollutants, MFCs are attractive for simultaneously treating waste water and generating clean renewable energy. …
