Sericulture has three stages: moriculture (growing mulberry), rearing of silkworms, and reeling of silk from cocoons.

Sericulture is the rearing of silkworms for the commercial production of silk. The silkworm most used is Bombyx mori, which feeds on mulberry leaves. The whole process is carried out in three broad stages:

  1. Moriculture (mulberry cultivation): Mulberry plants are grown and maintained, because their leaves are the sole food of the mulberry silkworm. A healthy, continuous supply of tender mulberry leaves is essential for good-quality cocoons.

  2. Rearing of silkworms: Eggs (produced in a grainage) are hatched into larvae, which are reared on chopped/whole mulberry leaves through their instars. The larvae grow, moult and finally, when full-grown, spin a protective cocoon of silk thread around themselves (spinning).
