Silk is secreted as a fibroin+sericin protein fluid by the silk glands of the silkworm larva; it is pushed out through the spinneret, hardens in air into a filament, and is wound into a cocoon.

Silk is a natural protein fibre produced by the larva (caterpillar) of the silkworm, most importantly Bombyx mori, when it is ready to pupate.

Formation of silk:

  1. Silk glands: The fully-grown silkworm larva possesses a pair of long silk glands (which are modified salivary/labial glands) in its body. These glands produce and store the raw material of silk.
  2. Secretion: The silk glands secrete a clear, sticky, viscous liquid made of two proteins:
  • Fibroin — the actual silk protein that forms the thread, and
  • Sericin (silk gum) — a gummy protein that surrounds and cements the fibroin.
  1. Spinning through the spinneret: When the larva is about to form a cocoon, this liquid silk is squeezed out through a small tube-like opening on its lower lip called the spinneret. As the fluid comes out and meets the air, it solidifies (hardens) into a fine, strong, continuous filament of silk. …
