Macrobrachium rosenbergii is the giant freshwater prawn (scampi) — large, fast-growing, freshwater-living but with a brackish-water larval stage, long clawed legs in males, and high commercial value.

Macrobrachium rosenbergii is the giant river prawn or giant freshwater prawn, commonly called scampi. It is one of the most important species in commercial prawn (shrimp) culture, especially in India and Southeast Asia.

Five features of Macrobrachium rosenbergii:

  1. Largest freshwater prawn: it is the biggest of the freshwater prawns, males reaching a large size (up to about 30 cm and several hundred grams), which makes it economically very attractive.
  2. Habitat and life cycle: the adult lives and grows in fresh water (rivers, ponds), but the eggs hatch into larvae that require brackish (slightly saline) water to develop; after metamorphosis the young prawns migrate back to fresh water. Thus it needs both fresh and brackish water in its life cycle.
