Aquaculture's prospects: abundant protein food, rural/coastal employment, foreign-exchange from exports, productive use of water resources, and high yields through scientific intensive farming.

Aquaculture is the controlled cultivation of aquatic organisms — fishes, prawns, molluscs, etc. — in fresh, brackish and marine waters. Because the demand for protein food is rising rapidly while capture (wild) fisheries are limited, aquaculture has excellent prospects and is one of the fastest-growing food-producing sectors.

Prospects (importance/scope) of aquaculture:

  1. Source of protein food: aquaculture yields large quantities of fish and shellfish, which are cheap, easily digestible, high-quality animal protein rich in vitamins and minerals — helping to meet the food and nutritional needs of a growing population and fight malnutrition.
  2. Employment and livelihood: fish and prawn farming, hatcheries, feed production, processing and marketing provide employment to millions of people, especially in rural and coastal areas, improving their economic status.
  3. Foreign exchange: export of cultured prawns (e.g. tiger prawn), fish and other seafood earns substantial foreign exchange for the country.
  4. Use of available resources: aquaculture makes productive use of ponds, tanks, reservoirs, coastal brackish waters and even waterlogged wastelands that are otherwise unproductive; integrated farming (fish with paddy, ducks or poultry) increases returns from the same land/water. …
