Populations follow one of two characteristic growth patterns over time. The J-shaped growth form is rapid, near-exponential increase driven by the organism's full biotic potential, halted abruptly by environmental resistance or a sudden limiting factor — many insect populations show this, exploding during the rainy season and collapsing at its end.
