Substitute goods (competing goods) are goods that can replace one another in satisfying a want, such as tea and coffee, or ink pen and ball pen. Because they serve the same purpose, there is a direct (positive) relationship between the price of one and the demand for the other: when the price of one substitute (say tea) rises, consumers shift to the other (coffee), so the demand for coffee increases, and vice versa.

Meaning of Substitute Goods

Substitute goods are those which can be used as alternatives for each other because they satisfy the same want. A consumer can choose either good to meet the need. Common examples are tea and coffee, Pepsi and Coca-Cola, and a ball pen and an ink pen.
