Meristems are classified by location — apical (tip, primary growth), lateral (sides, secondary/girth growth), and intercalary (base of internodes, elongation/regrowth) — each with a distinct role in plant growth.

Based on their position in the plant body, meristems are of three types:

  1. Apical meristem:
    • Location: present at the tips of the main and lateral roots, and at the tips of the main stem and its branches (shoot apex).
    • Function: produces primary growth, i.e. increase in the length of the root and shoot; gives rise to the primary plant body.
  2. Lateral meristem:
    • Location: occurs laterally in the mature (non-apical) region of roots and stems — comprises the vascular cambium and the cork cambium (phellogen).
    • Function: produces secondary growth, i.e. increase in the girth/diameter of the stem and root (e.g. wood formation, bark formation), typically seen in dicot and gymnosperm stems/roots.
  3. Intercalary meristem: …
