Apical meristems (root/shoot tips) - growth in length; intercalary meristems (base of internodes/leaves) - further elongation; lateral meristems (cambia) - growth in girth.

Meristems are tissues made of actively dividing cells. On the basis of their location in the plant body they are of three types:

  1. Apical meristem:
    • Location: at the tips (apices) of the root and the shoot.
    • Function: responsible for primary growth, i.e. increase in the length of the root and shoot; it forms the primary plant body.
  2. Intercalary meristem:
    • Location: situated in between mature (permanent) tissues, usually at the base of internodes or at the base of leaves (common in grasses and other monocots).
    • Function: helps in the elongation (increase in length) of internodes; it is a part of the primary meristem and enables regrowth after grazing/cutting.
