Apical meristems (root/shoot tips) cause elongation, intercalary meristems (internode/leaf bases) help regrowth and elongation, and lateral meristems (cambia) cause increase in girth.

Meristems are groups of actively dividing cells responsible for growth in plants. Based on their location, they are of three types:

  1. Apical meristem:
  • Location: at the tips (apices) of the main root and the shoot, and their branches.

  • Function: responsible for the increase in length of the plant (primary growth / elongation). It gives rise to the primary plant body.

  1. Intercalary meristem:
  • Location: in between mature (permanent) tissues, generally at the base of internodes or at the base of leaves (common in grasses and other monocots).

  • Function: helps in the elongation and regeneration of the plant part (e.g. regrowth of grass after grazing/mowing). It is a part of the primary meristem left behind.

  1. Lateral meristem: …
