Viruses behave like non-living matter outside a host, being inert and crystallisable, yet become active parasites once inside a host cell.

Viruses sit at an unusual boundary between living and non-living. Outside a specific host cell they are described as an inert crystalline structure — showing none of the activity associated with life. W.M. Stanley demonstrated in 1935 that viruses could be crystallised, and that these crystals consisted largely of protein, a property shared with many ordinary chemical substances rather than with living cells.

It is only once a virus infects a host cell that it takes over that cell's machinery to replicate itself — an activity that looks like a defining feature of life, but one the virus cannot perform independently, since it possesses no cellular structure of its own and no machinery to carry it out unaided. …
