Polysomes let several ribosomes translate one mRNA molecule at the same time, greatly speeding up and multiplying protein output from that message.

A polysome (polyribosome) forms when many ribosomes attach at successive points along a single strand of mRNA, each independently translating it into a polypeptide chain, all moving along the same mRNA one after another. Because several ribosomes work on the same message simultaneously (rather than one at a time), the cell can produce many copies of the same protein quickly and efficiently from one mRNA transcript, before the mRNA is degraded.
