'S' = Svedberg unit, the sedimentation coefficient measured by ultracentrifugation.

Ribosomes are ribonucleoprotein particles made of rRNA and proteins, found free in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum/nuclear membrane. Their size is expressed not in a normal length unit but in Svedberg units (S), named after Theodor Svedberg, who developed the ultracentrifuge.

The Svedberg unit denotes the rate at which a particle sediments in a centrifugal field — it depends on the molecular weight, density and shape of the particle, and is therefore not linearly additive.
