The stem, though normally an upright aerial structure bearing leaves and branches, is modified in many plants to perform special functions.
1. Underground stem modifications (mainly for perennation and food storage):
- Rhizome — a thick, horizontal underground stem that stores food and allows the plant to survive unfavourable seasons, e.g., ginger, turmeric.
- Tuber — the swollen tip of an underground stem branch, storing food, with 'eyes' (axillary buds) for vegetative propagation, e.g., potato.
- Corm — a vertical, thick underground stem (condensed rhizome) that stores food, e.g., Colocasia, Gladiolus.
- Bulb — a highly reduced disc-like stem surrounded by fleshy scale leaves storing food, e.g., onion, garlic.
2. Sub-aerial stem modifications (mainly for vegetative propagation):
- Runner — a slender lateral branch that creeps along the soil surface and produces new plants at nodes, e.g., grasses, Oxalis.
- Stolon — a lateral branch arising from the base of the main stem, arching and touching the ground to root and form a new plant, e.g., strawberry, jasmine.
- Offset — a short, thick horizontal branch found in aquatic plants, e.g., Pistia, Eichhornia.
- Sucker — a horizontal underground branch producing an erect leafy shoot at its tip, e.g., banana, chrysanthemum.
3. Aerial stem modifications (for climbing, protection, or photosynthesis):
- Stem tendrils — thin, wiry, coiled structures derived from axillary buds that help the plant climb, e.g., grapevine, Cucurbita.
- Thorns — hard, pointed, woody structures (modified axillary buds) that protect the plant from grazing animals, e.g., Citrus, Bougainvillea. …
