Stems are modified as underground stems (storage - potato, ginger), sub-aerial stems (propagation - runner, stolon, sucker, offset) and aerial stems (tendrils, thorns, phylloclades, bulbils) for various functions.

Stem modifications are grouped into three main types:

  1. Underground stem modifications (mainly for storage of food and perennation - surviving unfavourable seasons):
  • Rhizome: a horizontal, thick underground stem with nodes, internodes and scale leaves, e.g. ginger, turmeric, Canna.

  • Tuber: the swollen tip of an underground branch storing food; bears 'eyes' (axillary buds), e.g. potato.

  • Corm: a short, vertical, swollen underground stem, e.g. colocasia, Amorphophallus, gladiolus.

  • Bulb: a reduced disc-like stem with fleshy scale leaves storing food, e.g. onion, garlic.

  1. Sub-aerial stem modifications (mainly for vegetative propagation):
  • Runner: a slender branch creeping horizontally on the ground, rooting at the nodes, e.g. grasses, Oxalis.

  • Stolon: a lateral branch that arches and touches the ground to form a new plant, e.g. mint (Mentha), jasmine.

  • Sucker: a branch arising from an underground base and growing obliquely upward, e.g. chrysanthemum, banana.

  • Offset: a short, thick horizontal branch of one internode giving a rosette of leaves, e.g. Pistia, Eichhornia.

  1. Aerial (metamorphosed) stem modifications (for support, protection, photosynthesis, etc.):
  • Stem tendrils: thin, coiled, leafless branches for climbing, e.g. grapevine, passion flower, Cucurbita.
  • Thorns: hard, pointed, woody branches for protection (and to reduce water loss), e.g. Citrus, Bougainvillea, Duranta. …
