A phylloclade is a stem modified to look and function like a leaf — it is green, often flattened, and carries out photosynthesis — while the plant's actual leaves are reduced to spines, seen in plants like Opuntia.

Some plants, especially xerophytes adapted to dry conditions, reduce water loss by minimizing their leaf surface — often reducing true leaves to small spines or scales. To compensate for the resulting loss of photosynthetic surface, the STEM itself becomes modified: it becomes green, flattened (or sometimes cylindrical/fleshy), and takes over the function of photosynthesis. Such a modified, photosynthetic stem is called a phylloclade.

Because a phylloclade is of unlimited growth (continuing to grow indefinitely, adding new flattened segments) and bears nodes, internodes, and axillary buds/flowers like a normal stem, it can be distinguished from a true leaf despite its leaf-like appearance.
