Fusion of two motile but differently sized gametes is called anisogamy.

Algal sexual reproduction is grouped into three patterns based on the nature of the fusing gametes. In isogamy the two gametes are of the same size, and may both be motile (flagellated) or both non-motile. In oogamy, fusion is between one large, non-motile female gamete and a much smaller, motile male gamete -- a pattern seen in Volvox and Fucus.

Anisogamy sits between these two: the gametes are similar in general kind -- both motile -- but they differ in size, one being distinctly larger than the other. This pattern is seen in genera such as Eudorina.

  • (A) Oogamy is wrong because it involves a non-motile female gamete, not two motile gametes.
  • (B) Isogamy is wrong because the gametes there are of the same, not different, size.
  • (D) 'Zoogamy' is not one of the three recognised patterns of gamete fusion in algae.
✓Final answer

Fusion of two motile, differently sized gametes is anisogamy, option (C).
